Results showed a clear association with long-term use. Taking melatonin for over one year was linked to a 90% greater risk of heart failure. These users were also 3.5 times more likely to be hospitalized. Furthermore, they were twice as likely to die from any cause over the five-year study period.
Experts were surprised by these findings. Melatonin is widely considered a safe, natural sleep aid. However, the study only found a link, not a direct cause.
