Taylor Swift’s ‘Showgirl’ Film Tops Box Office With $33 Million Debut
Taylor Swift has once again dominated theaters — this time with “The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,” which earned an estimated $33 million in its opening weekend across the US and Canada, according to Comscore.
The 89-minute film, described as more of a promotional feature than a traditional movie, easily claimed the No. 1 spot, outperforming Dwayne Johnson’s “The Smashing Machine,” which opened to a modest $6 million. Swift’s latest release also added $13 million overseas, continuing her reign at the global box office following 2023’s hit concert film “The Eras Tour.”
Audience turnout was 88% female and 70% white, with CinemaScore viewers giving the film an A+ rating. Though Hollywood studios grumbled about its surprise two-week rollout and minimal marketing, theater owners hailed it as a much-needed boost after a slow summer season.
Swift’s film, which she said would only play for one weekend, proved yet again that her star power alone can drive massive ticket sales — even without a traditional blockbuster campaign.
