Trump Slaps 25–30% Tariffs on Furniture and Wood Imports, Hits Home Goods Hard

Trump imposes 25–30% tariffs on furniture and wood imports, hitting home goods prices.

The Trump administration has announced steep new tariffs on furniture and wood goods as part of a broader push to shield U.S. manufacturing. Under the plan, kitchen cabinets and vanities face a 25% tariff, while upholstered wood furniture will face 30% tariffs, set to take effect in the coming weeks. Reports indicate these levies may rise to 50% for cabinets by January.

These tariffs are being justified under national security provisions, expanding the scope of trade policy into everyday household items. Trump argues imported wood products threaten domestic industry and supply chains.

But critics warn of unintended consequences: higher costs for consumers, pressure on retailers, and inflationary ripple effects across the housing and home goods sectors. Some furniture stocks have already taken serious hits in response.

Meanwhile, legal questions are brewing. Tariffs imposed under emergency powers are being challenged in court for overstepping executive authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). In the case V.O.S. Selections v. Trump, judges recently ruled such tariffs were unlawful — setting the stage for further appeals.

As Washington ramps up trade tensions, consumers should brace for rising prices on couches, cabinets, and other home furnishings — a reminder that tariffs reach deeper than just factories.
