Wolverhampton Launches UK’s First Voluntary Safety Scheme to Crack Down on ‘Dodgy’ Cosmetic Procedures
Wolverhampton has started a new scheme to make beauty treatments safer. It is the first voluntary program of its kind in the UK. The goal is to give customers peace of mind. Many people worry about procedures and poor care.
The scheme covers popular services like Botox, cosmetic fillers, and chemical peels. Businesses that join will receive inspections. Environmental health officers check infection control and waste safety. They also review product safety and staff training.
If a salon passes, it gets a certificate. The council adds its details to an online public register. This makes it easy for customers to choose safe practitioners.
Council member Bhupinder Gakhal confirmed the scheme’s need. He noted that treatments are very popular. However, easy access does not mean they are all safe. Risky treatments can cause injury, infection, or worse. The council aims to act now. A national mandatory licensing scheme is coming. But the government’s plan will take a few more years to introduce.
This local action follows serious past concerns. For instance, the City of Wolverhampton Council was the first in England to stop an illegal non-surgical Brazilian Butt Lift operation in 2023. They urge all local beauty businesses to sign up.
