The road to the 2026 Champions League final in Budapest became clear on Friday during the official knockout stage draw in Nyon. UEFA officials mapped out the entire bracket for the Round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals. Several high-profile matchups emerged that will pit traditional European giants against one another. The most notable tie features Manchester City and Real Madrid meeting in the knockout rounds for the sixth time since 2019.
Real Madrid reached this stage after successfully navigating the knockout phase play-offs earlier this week. They now face a City side that finished the new league phase with a strong ranking. Meanwhile, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain will face Chelsea in another blockbuster encounter. These two clubs recently met in the Club World Cup final, where the English side secured a 3-0 victory.
The draw proved largely kind to the other Premier League representatives currently competing in the tournament. Arsenal, who finished the league phase with a perfect record, will play Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool is scheduled to return to Istanbul for a challenging fixture against Turkish champions Galatasaray. Tottenham Hotspur will test their defensive discipline against the tactical setup of Atletico Madrid.
Newcastle United finds itself in one of the most glamorous ties of the round against Barcelona. This matchup evokes memories of historic European nights between the two clubs from decades ago. In other fixtures, Bayern Munich will play Italian side Atalanta, while Norway’s Bodo/Glimt will face Sporting CP. Bodo/Glimt made history this year as the first Norwegian team to win a Champions League knockout tie.
The bracket also revealed potential pathways for the later stages of the competition. The winner of the City and Madrid clash is scheduled to meet either Bayern or Atalanta in the quarterfinals. Chelsea and Liverpool could potentially meet in an all-English quarterfinal if both sides win their respective opening rounds. Arsenal remains on the opposite side of the bracket from the other Premier League contenders.
Round of 16 matches are scheduled to begin during the second week of March. The first legs will take place on March 10 and 11, with return legs following on March 17 and 18. Teams that finished in the top eight of the league phase will host the second leg. This seeding provides a significant home-field advantage for teams like Arsenal, Bayern, and Liverpool.
UEFA also confirmed the dates for the subsequent rounds leading up to the final. The quarterfinals will take place in April, followed by the semifinals in late April and early May. The tournament will conclude at the Puskas Arena on May 30. Fans and analysts expect one of the most competitive knockout phases in the history of the competition.
