The club announced the acquisition of veteran winger Daniel Salloi from Sporting Kansas City on Thursday. The financial terms of the trade involve a substantial amount of General Allocation Money. Sporting Kansas City receives $300,000 in guaranteed funds, split across the 2026 and 2027 seasons. The deal also includes up to $700,000 in additional conditional payments based on performance metrics. Furthermore, Sporting KC retains a percentage of any future transfer fee if Salloi moves to another league.
Salloi departs Kansas City as one of the most successful homegrown players in franchise history. He spent a decade with the club, amassing 287 appearances across all competitions. During his tenure, he recorded 67 goals and 47 assists, ranking among the team’s all-time leaders. His contributions helped Sporting KC secure the U.S. Open Cup title in 2017.
The 29-year-old Hungarian international enjoyed a career-best season in 2021. He scored 16 goals that year and was a finalist for the MLS MVP award. Despite his high production levels, Salloi will not occupy a Designated Player spot in Toronto. This roster designation provides the Canadian club with the flexibility to pursue other high-profile signings.
Toronto officials expect Salloi to integrate quickly due to his extensive familiarity with the North American league. He has already participated in pre-season training this winter and is considered match-ready. His ability to play as both a winger and a central striker offers tactical options for the coaching staff. The team struggled with scoring last season and views him as a primary solution.
Sporting KC leadership noted that the trade provides the club with important roster flexibility. President David Lee thanked Salloi for his long-term dedication to the team on and off the field. The player was entering the final year of his contract, making it a strategic time for a transition. The move allows Kansas City to acquire assets to rebuild its own squad.
Salloi also holds U.S. citizenship, meaning he does not require an international roster slot in Toronto. This further simplifies the registration process for his new club.
