The Rutgers Scarlet Knights extended their postseason journey on Wednesday night with a resilient performance at the United Center. Entering the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 14 seed, Rutgers overcame a halftime deficit to defeat No. 11 seed Minnesota 72-67. This victory marks a significant turnaround for a team that struggled through much of the conference schedule.
Tariq Francis delivered a historic individual performance to lead the Scarlet Knights’ offensive effort. The guard poured in 29 points, which established a new program record for scoring in a Big Ten Tournament game. Francis showcased his range by connecting on five of his seven attempts from three-point territory. He also proved reliable at the free-throw line by sinking six of seven shots.
The contest remained tightly contested throughout the first half with nine different lead changes. Minnesota held a narrow 31-29 advantage at the break behind a balanced scoring attack. Grayson Grove and Cade Tyson provided the primary resistance for the Golden Gophers during the early stages. However, the momentum shifted permanently in favor of the Scarlet Knights midway through the second period.
Rutgers ignited a game-changing 11-0 run that capitalized on several Minnesota ball-handling errors. The Scarlet Knights turned 15 Gopher turnovers into 17 crucial points over the course of the night. This defensive intensity allowed Rutgers to build a late lead that Minnesota could not overcome. Jamichael Davis played a vital supporting role by contributing 13 points and six assists.
Center Emmanuel Ogbole also made his presence felt on both ends of the floor for Rutgers. He finished the game with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks to anchor the interior defense. Despite being assessed a flagrant-1 foul early in the second half, Ogbole remained a force in the paint. His defensive activity helped limit Minnesota’s scoring opportunities during the final minutes.
Minnesota fought back late as Cade Tyson hit two three-pointers in the closing seconds of play. Tyson finished with a team-high 24 points in a strong individual effort for the Gophers. However, the injury-depleted Minnesota roster struggled to match the depth and energy of the Rutgers bench. The Scarlet Knights outscored the Gophers’ reserves by a substantial 21-3 margin.
This win allows Rutgers to avenge a 19-point regular-season loss to the Gophers from February. Head coach Steve Pikiell praised his team’s defensive focus and ability to handle Minnesota’s zone defense. The Scarlet Knights shot 50 percent from the field in the second half to pull away.
Rutgers now turns its attention to a difficult quarterfinal matchup on Thursday night. They are scheduled to face the No. 6 seed UCLA Bruins in the next round. The team will look to maintain its defensive pressure as they pursue an unlikely tournament run.
