Thousands of men in England who have advanced prostate cancer are about to get a major new treatment option.
The UK health body, NICE, has given the green light for the drug darolutamide (also known as Nubeqa) to be used by the NHS.
What the Drug Does:
- It works by blocking the hormones that make cancer cells grow.
- The drug is taken as two pills, twice a day, alongside standard hormone treatment.
- Studies show that adding darolutamide can cut the risk of death by almost half (46%) for men whose cancer has spread.
Why It’s Great News: The charity Prostate Cancer UK says this drug is a “gentler” choice because it causes fewer side-effects than other treatments currently used. This is especially good for older men or those who struggle with the side effects of existing therapies.
At least 6,000 men every year are expected to get access to this powerful new option. While experts welcome the move, there are still worries that some eligible men might miss out due to differences in local healthcare access across the country.
