Canada Post Strikes Halt Mail Delivery Nationwide

Canada’s postal service has ground to a halt as thousands of postal workers walk off the job, igniting a national strike that is halting mail and package deliveries across the country.  The strike began following the government’s approval of sweeping reforms to postal services, including cuts to door-to-door delivery, office closures, and cost-saving measures.

Services are severely disrupted: millions of mail items already in transit may not reach their destinations in time, and new mail is not being accepted.  However, essential items—like federal benefit checks and passport mailings—are reportedly exempt and will continue.

Postal workers’ union members say they’re striking in protest of structural changes that threaten job security and service levels.  The federal government, for its part, argues that transformations are necessary to rescue the postal service from steep losses and declining demand.

As negotiations stall, Canadians are being urged to expect delays for everyday mail and parcels. Businesses and individuals are scrambling for alternatives. The strike underscores the tension between cost containment in public services and maintaining universal access to mail nationwide.
