North Korean leader Kim Jong Un publicly praised his military for participating in overseas operations throughout the preceding year. State media, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), reported his comments following a major ruling party meeting. Kim highlighted the foreign deployment as a major national achievement. This statement provides the regime’s rare official acknowledgment of troops fighting outside the Korean peninsula.
The remarks solidify North Korea’s strategic alignment with Russia. This alignment forms part of a mutual defense pact recently signed by Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin. While the KCNA did not specify the location, the context strongly points toward the war in Ukraine. North Korea has actively sent soldiers, artillery ammunition, and ballistic missiles to aid Moscow’s invasion efforts. By providing critical military resources, Pyongyang has deepened its role in the geopolitical conflict.
Kim emphasized that the soldiers’ participation in these operations successfully “demonstrated the reputation of our military.” He framed their actions as being the “genuine protector of international justice” and a sign of an “ever-victorious army.” Such hyperbolic language is typical of state propaganda. South Korean intelligence reports suggest the cost of this deployment has been high. Hundreds of North Korean soldiers have reportedly been killed, with thousands more sustaining injuries while fighting alongside Russian forces.
During the same central committee meeting, Kim addressed critical domestic policy and ideological issues. He lauded North Korea’s progress toward “accelerated forward momentum and redoubled self-sustainability” in 2025. This focus on internal strength and self-reliance remains central to the regime’s long-term planning. The meeting also addressed shortcomings within the party. Kim condemned “the wrong ideological viewpoint and inactive and irresponsible work attitude” of certain officials. He called for rooting out “evil” practices and boosting confidence among the ranks.
In return for its military support, analysts believe Pyongyang is receiving substantial benefits from Moscow. These transactions reportedly include critical military technology, financial assistance, and vital supplies of food and energy. This exchange has provided a lifeline to the heavily sanctioned North Korean economy. The partnership is allowing Kim to continue modernizing his nation’s defense capabilities despite international sanctions.
Kim’s praise for the overseas deployment signals his clear intent to maintain and potentially expand this strategic military collaboration. The move confirms North Korea’s growing confidence on the world stage, fueled by its strengthening ties with Russia. The coming year will likely see Pyongyang continue to leverage this relationship to secure its position and advance its military and economic goals. The international community views this troop deployment as a violation of United Nations resolutions.
