PayPal Taps India’s UPI as First Payments Partner for Global Platform

PayPal CEO Alex Chriss announced that India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become the first onboarded payments system partner for PayPal’s global payments platform, PayPal World.  This collaboration allows Indian users to transact internationally using UPI, bridging domestic digital payments with PayPal’s global reach.

Chriss highlighted how complex global financial regulations are a challenge, and noted that PayPal is working to comply with regulators while expanding consumer access.  Previously, PayPal had announced PayPal World’s launch with UPI, China’s Tenpay, and Mexico’s Mercado Pago as initial partners, enabling cross-border wallet interoperability.

India’s UPI system already dominates domestic digital payments—processing over 85% of retail transaction volume.  By integrating with UPI, PayPal aims to simplify how Indian customers shop globally, using their familiar payment app without needing foreign credit cards.

This move strengthens UPI’s global footprint and signals how regional payment networks can partner with fintech giants to create seamless, cross-border commerce.
