A new survey of 2,000 Spaniards aged 30 to 50 finds that 7 in 10 fear cognitive decline more than physical changes linked to ageing.
Only about 15% of respondents say physical signs like wrinkles are their main concern. On the other hand, 87% believe society still focuses on appearance, but 95% say their priority is health and well-being.
Regionally, worry about mental decline is highest in Castilla-La Mancha (78%) and Aragon (75%). By contrast, fear of appearance is more common in Cantabria and the Balearic Islands (around 20%).
The survey also highlights gender differences. Women express a higher overall concern about ageing (76% vs 66% of men), especially regarding health and independence.
When it comes to action, 9 in 10 Spaniards say they have changed their habits to age better. Common steps include more exercise (54%) and better nutrition (52%). About 63% say prevention motivates them more than illness.
Overall, Spain seems to be shifting its view on ageing. The new mindset places mental sharpness and holistic health at the centre, rather than just appearance. The idea of ageing is evolving from loss to opportunity – with a clear focus on retaining brain power as much as physical health.
