CJ Cox Hits Career High as Purdue Overpowers Northwestern in Big Ten Showdown
  • Freshman CJ Cox scored a career-best 22 points to lead Purdue to a comfortable victory.
  • The Boilermakers shot over 51 percent from the field to secure their 23rd win of the season.
  • Purdue maintained its position in the Big Ten standings with a dominant 80-64 home win.

Purdue guard CJ Cox delivered a standout performance on Wednesday night at Mackey Arena. The freshman scored a career-high 22 points to lead the 15th-ranked Boilermakers past Northwestern. Purdue secured an 80-64 victory to remain perfect at home this season. This win improves their overall record to 23-7 and their conference mark to 13-6.

The Boilermakers established control early in the first half with efficient perimeter shooting. Cox connected on four of his six attempts from beyond the three-point arc. His scoring outburst helped Purdue build a double-digit lead before the halftime break. The home team went into the locker room with a comfortable 40-27 advantage.

Braden Smith provided essential playmaking for the Purdue offense throughout the contest. Smith finished the game with 14 points and distributed eight assists to his teammates. His ability to navigate the Northwestern defense allowed the Boilermakers to maintain a high tempo. Fletcher Loyer also contributed 13 points to the balanced scoring effort for the hosts.

Northwestern struggled to find an offensive rhythm against Purdue’s physical defensive scheme. The Wildcats shot just 39 percent from the field during the first twenty minutes of play. Nick Martinelli led the visitors with 17 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort. Ty Berry added 13 points but the team could not overcome the early deficit.

The Boilermakers extended their lead to as many as 21 points during the second half. Trey Kaufman-Renn anchored the interior with 12 points and six rebounds for the Boilermakers. Purdue outscored Northwestern in the paint and won the rebounding battle by a significant margin. This dominance inside allowed the guards more freedom to operate on the outside.

Northwestern attempted a late surge to cut into the lead during the final ten minutes. Jalen Leach scored 10 points to help the Wildcats narrow the gap slightly. However, Purdue responded with timely baskets from Cox and Smith to seal the win. The Wildcats fell to 17-13 overall and 8-11 in Big Ten play with the loss.

Purdue demonstrated great discipline by committing only nine turnovers during the entire game. Their ball security prevented Northwestern from scoring easy points in transition. The Boilermakers finished the night shooting 51.9 percent as a collective unit. This offensive efficiency has been a hallmark of their success at Mackey Arena this year.

The victory keeps Purdue in contention for a high seed in the upcoming conference tournament. They will conclude their regular season schedule with a road game against Wisconsin this weekend. Northwestern will look to regroup for their final home game against Maryland. Both teams are now focused on securing the best possible position for postseason play in March.
