- The two teams split their regular-season series with each squad earning a victory on the road.
The Providence Friars prepare for a high-stakes quarterfinal matchup on Thursday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. They face the top-seeded and 13th-ranked St. John’s Red Storm in a battle for postseason survival. This contest follows a dominant performance by Providence in the tournament’s opening round.
Providence earned its spot in the quarterfinals by defeating Butler 91-81 on Wednesday. Freshman Stefan Vaaks delivered a historic performance by tying a Big East tournament record with eight three-pointers. He finished the game with 28 points to lead all scorers. Teammates Ryan Mela and Jaylin Sellers also surpassed the 20-point mark in the victory.
St. John’s enters the tournament as the outright regular-season champion for the second consecutive year. The Red Storm finished the conference schedule with an impressive 18-2 record. They currently boast the league’s top-ranked defense and a potent interior scoring threat. Coach Rick Pitino has focused his team on maintaining their defensive intensity throughout the postseason.
The primary concern for the Providence defense remains senior forward Zuby Ejiofor. The 6-foot-9 standout was recently named the Big East Player of the Year after a dominant campaign. Ejiofor averaged 16 points and over seven rebounds per game during the regular season. He also ranks among the league leaders in both assists and blocked shots.
Ejiofor has historically performed well against the Friars in previous meetings. Earlier this year, he recorded a career-high 33 points and 15 rebounds in a narrow loss to Providence. His ability to score from the perimeter and dominate the offensive glass creates significant tactical problems. The Friars must limit his second-chance opportunities to stay competitive.
Providence head coach Kim English emphasized the need for a physical presence in the paint. The Friars will rely on center Oswin Erhunmwunse to contest Ejiofor’s shots near the rim. Erhunmwunse currently averages over two blocks per game and serves as the team’s defensive anchor. The battle for rebounding supremacy will likely determine the tempo of the game.
The regular-season series between these two programs ended in a 1-1 split. St. John’s secured a double-digit victory in their last meeting on February 14. In that game, the Red Storm successfully limited Providence’s three-point shooting opportunities. The Friars will need to find cleaner looks for Vaaks and Sellers to pull off the upset.
St. John’s also features significant backcourt depth with players like Dylan Darling and Ian Jackson. Darling led the team in scoring during their most recent win over the Friars. The Red Storm defense frequently employs a full-court press to force turnovers and generate transition points. Providence must show better ball security than they did in their previous trip to the Garden.
The winner of this matchup moves into the semifinals on Friday night. For Providence, a victory would significantly bolster their resume for the NCAA tournament. For St. John’s, the game represents the first step toward a potential conference title sweep. Both teams understand that mistakes will be magnified in the bright lights of New York City.
