Developer Housemarque has confirmed a new release date for its highly anticipated PlayStation 5 exclusive, Saros. The spiritual successor to the acclaimed Returnal will now launch on April 30, 2026. This date adjustment, subtly revealed in a new trailer during The Game Awards, provides the studio with crucial additional time for polish and refinement. Creative Director Gregory Louden assures fans that this extra month is dedicated to ensuring Saros meets their ambition as the “ultimate evolution” of the gameplay-first experience.
The new promotional footage provided the most detailed look yet at the game’s expanded narrative and evolving combat. Saros thrusts players into the role of Arjun Devraj, a powerful Soltari Enforcer. Devraj is on a relentless quest for answers within the lost, hostile off-world colony of Carcosa. This planet is perpetually shrouded under a dark, ominous eclipse, setting a chilling tone for the sci-fi action.
The narrative scope of Saros is Housemarque’s most ambitious to date. The story will unfold through conversations with an ensemble cast of non-playable characters (NPCs) in the Passage, which acts as a central hub between runs. Players will also piece together the haunting history of Carcosa by discovering Soltari Hologram logs and audio entries scattered across the shape-shifting world. The team has engaged a stellar voice cast, including Rahul Kohli as Devraj, who is intent on creating a deeply emotional and powerful character study.
Gameplay remains true to the studio’s signature style, emphasizing fast-paced, third-person shooting action, often described as a “bullet ballet.” The intensity of combat against the terrifying Carcosan flora and fauna is visually stunning. However, Housemarque introduces key mechanical innovations to deepen the experience. The new Parry mechanic is a standout addition. With precise timing of the R1 button, players can reflect certain incoming enemy projectiles back at their attackers. This ability offers a new layer of tactical depth and rewarding skill mastery in the chaotic firefights.
A significant design change from Returnal is the implementation of permanent progression systems. While the world of Carcosa resets upon death, Devraj retains long-term suit and weapon upgrades. This “Come Back Stronger” system is designed to remove the frustration associated with losing all progress, ensuring every run feels meaningful. The ultimate goal is to create a challenging yet rewarding roguelite experience that encourages aggressive and adaptable play styles.
Pre-orders for Saros are currently available on the PlayStation Store. The Digital Deluxe edition offers exclusive bonuses, including two days of early access, allowing players to begin their journey on April 28. It also includes celebratory Soltari suits inspired by other beloved PlayStation Studios franchises. The game is being developed exclusively for the PlayStation 5, with confirmed enhancements to leverage the power of the PS5 Pro hardware.
