Shutdown Ends: Full SNAP Benefits, Back Pay, and Normal Flights Resume After 43 Days

The longest US government shutdown is finally over. President Trump signed a bill to fund the federal government. This ends the 43-day dispute. Now, many government functions will quickly restart.

The crisis caused major problems nationwide. Air travel was especially affected. TSA agents and air traffic controllers worked without pay. This led to dangerous staffing shortages. The FAA had to cut 10% of flights at 40 major airports. This caused huge delays and cancellations. Travelers can expect airport operations to return to normal now.

Millions of vulnerable Americans faced hunger. This was due to the threat to SNAP (food stamp) funding. The new bill restores full funding for the program. However, receiving full payments will vary by state at first. Federal employees will now receive all back pay owed. Lawmakers also agreed to hold a key vote. They will vote in December on extending expiring ACA (Obamacare) subsidies. Other services, like Smithsonian museums, will reopen on a rolling basis.
