Elon Musk says former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin privately discussed the idea of building a tunnel between Russia and Alaska. Musk shared the claim during a virtual event, saying the discussions happened before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The proposed tunnel would connect the two countries under the Bering Strait, one of the narrowest points between Russia and the United States. Musk said the concept was not new and had been talked about for years as a possible “peace project.”
The tunnel could, in theory, support trade and transport between the continents. However, experts say such a plan would face huge engineering, political, and security challenges. The war in Ukraine and rising tensions between Moscow and Washington make the idea even less realistic.
Neither Trump nor Putin has publicly confirmed Musk’s version of the conversation. The Kremlin declined to comment. Trump’s team has not responded.
Musk did not say whether any planning or agreements were made. He only stated that the idea was discussed as a possibility before relations between the countries deteriorated.
The remark has sparked debate online. Some critics call the idea unrealistic, while others say long-term visions often sound impossible until geopolitical conditions change.
