The Denver Nuggets leaned on a historic scoring performance from Jamal Murray to defeat the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday. Murray dominated the contest from the start and finished with a season-high 53 points at Ball Arena. His offensive explosion helped Denver secure a 142-135 victory in a high-scoring Western Conference battle.
Murray set the tone early by scoring 33 points before the halftime break. He connected on 11 of his 16 shots in the first half and at one point scored 14 straight points. This scoring outburst provided the Nuggets with a nine-point cushion as they headed into the locker room.
Nikola Jokic complemented Murray’s scoring with a massive triple-double of 23 points, 21 rebounds, and 19 assists. During the second quarter, Jokic officially recorded his 6,000th career assist on a pass to Murray for a layup. He becomes one of the few players in NBA history to reach such a significant playmaking milestone.
The Mavericks remained competitive throughout the evening despite trailing for most of the game. Rookie Cooper Flagg led the Dallas effort with 26 points and showcased his versatility on the offensive end. Naji Marshall also contributed 22 points to help the visitors stay within striking distance during the fourth quarter.
Dallas managed to trim an 11-point deficit down to just one point with four minutes remaining. However, the Nuggets responded with a decisive scoring run to put the game out of reach. Murray rediscovered his rhythm in the closing minutes by hitting a critical three-pointer and a step-back jumper.
The victory moves the Nuggets into a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference standings. They currently hold the tiebreaker over the Minnesota Timberwolves after winning their season series earlier this year. Denver has now won eight of its last ten games as the postseason approaches.
For the Mavericks, this loss represents their fifth consecutive defeat during a difficult stretch of the schedule. The team has struggled to find defensive consistency and has lost 24 of its last 28 games since January. They currently face significant pressure to secure a spot in the upcoming play-in tournament.
Denver’s bench also provided valuable minutes to support the primary stars during the high-scoring affair. Peyton Watson hit a vital corner three-pointer during the final surge to help solidify the lead. The team’s ability to execute under pressure proved to be the difference in the final minutes.
Murray finished the game shooting 19 of 28 from the floor, including nine successful shots from long range. He fell just two points shy of his career-high mark of 55 points set earlier in his career. His performance reinforces his status as one of the most dangerous scoring guards in the league.
The Nuggets will look to extend their winning streak when they host the Utah Jazz on Friday. Dallas will travel to face the Portland Trail Blazers as they search for a way to snap their current slide. Both teams remain focused on their respective playoff positioning during the final weeks of the season.
