The Password is Dead: Apple, Google, and Microsoft Battle to Replace Logins with Passkeys

The old, easily compromised password is now facing extinction. Tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft are promoting a better system. This new method is called Passkeys. Passkeys replace traditional passwords with cryptographic keys. These keys are stored only on your personal device.

Your phone or computer uses biometrics to verify you. This means you use Face ID, a fingerprint, or a PIN to log in. This new method is much safer than passwords. Passkeys cannot be stolen by hackers through phishing emails. They are also immune to large data breaches. Attackers cannot steal a password that is never stored on a company’s server.

Passkeys are part of the FIDO2 and WebAuthn standards. This industry-wide effort aims to permanently end passwords. They make logging in both faster and significantly more secure. While passwords will exist for a while, Passkeys are quickly becoming the new default for logging into accounts.
