Google announced plans to spend $15 billion over five years to build a massive AI data center in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marking its biggest investment in India to date.
The campus will launch with 1 gigawatt capacity and eventually serve as Google’s largest AI hub outside the U.S. The move supports India’s growing role in the global AI race and addresses rising demand for cloud and computing infrastructure.
Government and industry officials say the project will generate 188,000 jobs and strengthen ecosystems for startups, data services, and clean energy in the region. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian framed the investment as a “long-term vision to accelerate India’s own AI mission.”
India has become vital for global tech players. Nearly a billion people access the internet by devices running Google’s Android OS, making India a strategic growth market.
However, Google also faces regulatory and public pressure. The announcement comes amid tension over tariffs and trade policy between India and the U.S. Some officials and business leaders have voiced nationalism in response to foreign tech dominance.
Still, the scale and ambition of this investment underline Google’s commitment to deepening its presence in India’s digital economy and AI future.
