WHO Launches EIOS 2.0 to Strengthen Global Disease Detection

WHO rolls out EIOS 2.0 with AI and new features to boost global health security.

The World Health Organization (WHO), along with the European Commission and Germany’s health ministry, has unveiled version 2.0 of its Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS) system.

Since 2017, EIOS has been a key tool for early detection of global health threats. More than 110 countries and 30 organizations now use it to sift through open-source data in real time.

The upgraded system introduces artificial intelligence (AI) features, adds radio monitoring (with automatic transcription), supports more data sources, and offers a multilingual interface to boost access globally.

Launching at the WHO Hub in Berlin, the update also improves collaboration across nations. Users can now jointly monitor events, share insights, and act faster on alerts.

WHO says EIOS 2.0 will help public health agencies detect disease outbreaks tied to climate change, conflict, or new pathogens—before they escalate.

The system is free for WHO Member States and eligible organizations. To support rollout, WHO will provide online training, multilingual webinars, and updated user guides.

Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, WHO’s Executive Director for Health Emergencies, said the upgrade marks a new era in how the world responds to health threats.
