Warning: Sleep Apnea Doubles the Risk of Tiny Brain Bleeds, Increasing Stroke and Dementia Danger

A new study links Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) to serious brain damage. Researchers studied middle-aged and older adults over eight years. They found that severe OSA more than doubles the risk of tiny brain bleeds. These tiny bleeds are called cerebral microbleeds (CMBs).

CMBs are small hemorrhages inside the brain. They are often linked to a higher risk of stroke and dementia later in life. OSA causes repeated breathing pauses during sleep. This process leads to lower oxygen levels and poor rest.

People with moderate to severe OSA showed a significantly higher risk of CMBs. This link exists even if patients lack other risk factors for cognitive decline. Experts say this is a major finding. It highlights OSA as a treatable risk factor for brain disease. Doctors should screen patients with neurological symptoms for OSA. Effective management of OSA may help prevent serious long-term damage.
