Vitamin D3 Breakthrough: Targeted Supplementation May Halve Risk of Second Heart Attack
A new study suggests Vitamin D3 supplements can protect heart attack survivors. Researchers at Intermountain Health tested a targeted D3 treatment plan. They gave participants different D3 doses to achieve an optimal blood level of 40 ng/ml. Nearly 60% of subjects started with a high 5,000 IU dose.
The study followed people who had recently experienced a heart attack. The targeted D3 group had a major benefit. They cut the risk of a repeat heart attack by more than half. The repeat heart attack rate was 3.8% for the test group versus 7.9% for the control group.
Overall, the treatment did not reduce all major cardiac events. However, the finding on repeat heart attacks is very significant. Experts believe this success comes from addressing individual needs. They suggest D3 may improve arterial health and lower inflammation. Researchers now plan a larger trial to confirm these positive results.
