Uruguay legalises euthanasia in landmark move amid global debate

Uruguay legalises euthanasia, allowing terminally ill adults to choose assisted death under strict rules.

Uruguay has passed a landmark law legalising euthanasia and assisted dying for terminally ill patients. The legislation was approved after a 20–11 vote in the Senate, marking a historic shift in Latin America’s approach to end-of-life care.

Under the new law, eligible adults with a terminal illness may choose medically assisted death if they meet strict criteria and go through multiple approvals. The government emphasises that safeguards — including medical evaluation, cooling-off periods and mental-health assessments — will prevent misuse.

President +++ says the policy reflects Uruguay’s long tradition of social progress and individual rights. He called the bill “a final act of compassion” for those who face unbearable suffering.

Supporters state that the law empowers individuals to decide their fate, alleviates prolonged pain and upholds dignity. They hope it will reduce the emotional burden on families and the financial strain on palliative care services.

However, critics argue the measure could send the wrong message about disability and ageing. Some disability rights groups warn it might pressure vulnerable people into choosing death instead of life.

Healthcare professionals also voiced concerns over how the change will affect doctors, nurses and the medical ethics of “do no harm.” Uruguay now joins a small group of jurisdictions in Latin America, and worldwide, that permit euthanasia under certain conditions.

Implementation of the law will begin later this year. Officials plan training for medical staff and a national oversight body to monitor applications and outcomes. While few regions in Latin America have adopted such a policy, the move signals growing global debate on assisted dying.
