UK urges vaccination as new mpox strain spreads in Europe
UK health officials are urging gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) to get vaccinated against mpox after a new strain began spreading in Europe.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says a small number of infections from a strain called clade Ib have been found in Spain, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, and the US.
In the UK, 16 cases have been confirmed, all linked to travel.
Officials warn that mpox is usually mild, but it can become serious, and vaccination offers the best protection. Charities say people should get vaccinated before travelling to Winter Pride events in Europe.
Who should get the vaccine?
Vaccination is recommended for people at higher risk, mainly GBMSM who:
- have multiple sexual partners
- have group sex
- visit sex-on-premises venues
- work in such venues
- or have close contact with someone with mpox
Doses are available through sexual health clinics, but people should call ahead before attending.
Symptoms to watch
Typical symptoms include:
- painful skin rash or blisters
- fever and headaches
- muscle pain, tiredness, swollen glands
Mpox spreads through close physical contact, coughing or sneezing, or touching contaminated bedding or towels.
