Trump Declares U.S.-Canada Trade Talks Will Not Resume, Citing Ontario Ad

Donald Trump announced that the United States and Canada will not restart trade negotiations after he pulled the plug last week. The decision followed an ad campaign by Ontario province that Trump described as antagonistic to U.S. tariffs.

Trump said the advertisement broadcast in the U.S. had lead to the breakdown in talks with Canada. He signalled there is no timeline for when discussions might continue.

Diplomatic sources from Canada revealed that negotiations had made meaningful progress, with draft terms beginning to take shape before being halted.

This pause comes as Canada is one of America’s largest trading partners. A sudden freeze in talks raises concerns over how upcoming bilateral trade and tariff issues will be handled. The breakdown could increase uncertainty for exporters and industries on both sides of the border.

In response, Canadian officials stated that while formal talks are paused, communication lines remain open. They emphasised they remain ready to resume negotiations when conditions allow.

Economists say that the deadlock signals a sharper shift in Washington’s trade diplomacy and increases risks of unilateral U.S. tariff actions. The move may also boost investor caution over trade-sensitive sectors.
