OpenAI and Oracle Launch $Multi-Billion “Stargate” Data Centre Campus in Michigan
OpenAI and Oracle have partnered with Related Digital to build a large-scale AI data-centre campus in Saline Township, Michigan.
The facility is planned as part of the wider “Stargate” infrastructure project, targeting more than 8 gigawatts (GW) of computing capacity across several U.S. sites.
Construction is set to begin in early 2026. Officials say the project will create over 2,500 union construction jobs and generate significant long-term local employment.
Although the exact investment amount isn’t disclosed, industry analysis suggests that a 1 GW-scale data centre of this type could cost in the ballpark of $50 billion.
OpenAI says this new campus keeps the Stargate project on pace toward its goal of delivering 10 GW of capacity. It also reflects mounting pressure in the AI industry for massive infrastructure build-out.
However, analysts caution that such spending raises questions about whether the AI boom could be inflating into a financial bubble, given the staggering sums and tight timelines.
