Microsoft to End Windows 10 Support in 2025: What Users Need to Know

Windows 10 support ends in 2025, upgrade to Windows 11 or risk security threats.

Microsoft has confirmed it will end support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025, affecting millions of users worldwide. After that date, devices still running Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates, leaving them vulnerable to cyberattacks.

The company is urging users to upgrade to Windows 11, which remains free for eligible computers. However, many older PCs do not meet the system requirements, meaning users may need to buy new hardware.

According to Statcounter, around 43% of global Windows devices were still using Windows 10 as of July 2025. In the UK alone, consumer group Which? estimates 21 million people are still using the older system, with a quarter saying they plan to keep using it even after support ends.

To help users transition, Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This will provide critical security patches until October 2026. EU users can register for free, while others may pay $30 or use 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Businesses will pay $61 per device.

Consumer advocates have criticized the move, saying it will push users to replace working computers, increasing electronic waste. Nathan Proctor of the US group PIRG said, “People are tired of short-lived devices we can’t fix. We deserve tech that lasts.”

Experts warn that continuing to use Windows 10 after support ends could expose systems to malware and compliance risks. To stay protected, users should upgrade to Windows 11 or sign up for ESU before October 2025.
