Life's Essential 8: Simple Heart Health Strategies Cut Dementia Risk for Diabetics, Study Finds

New research shows hope for people with Type 2 diabetes. They face a higher risk for both heart disease and dementia. A study found that following the American Heart Association’s (AHA) “Life’s Essential 8” guidelines can lower this dementia risk.

The study looked at health data from over 35,000 adults with Type 2 diabetes. Those who maintained moderate to high cardiovascular health lowered their dementia risk by 15%. This health score uses eight factors. They include exercise, diet, sleep, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, and smoking status.

Significantly, the results held true for people with a high genetic risk for dementia. For this group, high heart health lowered the risk by over 20%. This suggests that genetics do not predetermine brain health. Lifestyle changes can greatly protect brain function. Experts agree: the heart and brain are connected. They advise people to start with small, manageable health habits. Progress in any of the eight areas will benefit both the heart and the brain.
