Figma Stock Surges 7% After Sam Altman Showcases ChatGPT Integration
San Francisco — Shares of Figma jumped more than 7% on Monday after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted the design platform during a live demo at the company’s annual DevDay conference — unveiling a seamless integration between ChatGPT and Figma’s collaborative design tools.
The move marked Figma’s biggest single-day rally since its IPO in July, as investors cheered deeper ties between two of the most influential names in generative AI and design software.
Altman’s Demo: “Figma, Turn This Sketch Into a Diagram”
On stage, Altman showcased how developers can build and embed third-party apps directly into ChatGPT using OpenAI’s new Apps SDK (software development kit).
“When someone’s using ChatGPT, you’ll be able to find an app by asking for it by name,” Altman said. “For example, you could sketch out a product flow and then say, Figma, turn this sketch into a workable diagram. The Figma app will take over, respond, and complete the action.”
The integration allows users to trigger Figma actions directly within ChatGPT conversations, reducing the need to switch platforms. It also lets ChatGPT automatically suggest Figma tools when design-related tasks arise.
In a follow-up blog post, Figma product manager Luke Zhang confirmed that the integration enables instant collaboration — with ChatGPT users able to log in and interact with Figma without leaving the chat window.
A Boost for Both AI and Design Workflows
Figma, which has been steadily expanding its generative AI features, now leverages OpenAI models to help designers brainstorm, layout, and refine visual ideas faster. The new integration positions Figma as a central tool in AI-driven product design — a growing market among startups and enterprises alike.
The announcement also underscores OpenAI’s strategy to transform ChatGPT into a platform for third-party apps, allowing developers to monetize custom integrations through the Apps SDK, which is built on Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol, an open industry standard for AI app interoperability.
“Subscribers using apps connected through the SDK can log in directly inside ChatGPT,” Altman explained. “People building products in Figma can also launch FigJam to keep developing their ideas.”
Developers will be able to submit their apps for review later in 2025, paving the way for an entire ecosystem of tools built inside ChatGPT — from design and coding assistants to e-commerce and data analytics plugins.
Market Reaction and Future Outlook
Figma’s stock surge reflects growing investor enthusiasm around the company’s expanding role in the AI ecosystem. The 7% rally came just days after OpenAI announced a new feature that allows ChatGPT users to purchase Etsy products directly through the platform — signaling OpenAI’s ambitions to evolve ChatGPT into a multifunctional digital marketplace.
For Figma, the partnership not only enhances visibility but also cements its reputation as a leader in AI-assisted design collaboration — bridging the gap between human creativity and automated intelligence.
